Silhouettes of a diverse group of people asking for #NoMuslimBanEver

The U.S. Supreme Court ruling this morning in Trump v. Hawaii is deeply disturbing. It will have an immediate and chilling impact on Americans who will not be able to reunite with loved ones, and it will mean patients go without life-saving health care and young people go without education.

We are also profoundly concerned that this decision will intensify the bigotry, hatred, and specifically islamophobia that President Trump so often promotes.

In upholding the Trump administration’s third attempt at a ban on Muslims seeking asylum, our highest Court has undermined our Constitution’s protections against discrimination based on religion and allowed bigotry to prevail. Five justices bowed to a President who time and again exhibits deep and appalling racism.

This is not the first time the Supreme Court has handed down a ruling that undermines our country’s values; in the past it has ruled in favor of slavery and permitted Japanese Americans to be forced into concentration camps. Those rulings were eventually reversed and this one must be too.

MomsRising and its members will continue to fight bigotry and discrimination in all their forms. Just as we are fighting night and day for asylum-seeking families that have been separated, we will fight back against politicians who advance bigotry and judicial appointees who will not protect our country’s values. Today’s decision must not stand.
