Food should be safe; that ought to go without saying. Yet, the recent string of food-related illness outbreaks has made it clear that you can’t take food safety for granted.

Blue Bell ice cream, Sabra Hummus, Trader Joe's chicken sausage... the list goes on. The worst thing, in my mind, is that I had to find out about all of this from my Facebook news feed. It's not exactly comforting to know that social media is the place to learn about dangerous food-borne illness outbreaks.

Luckily, there are resources available online to help. I’ve rounded them up for you here.

CHECK

The FDA lists all food safety recalls on their website and regularly tweets out food recalls using the Twitter handle @FDA_recalls

CHAT

Have a specific question? Ask Karen is both a website and a free phone app that offers an encyclopedic knowledge about food and food safety, as well as a live chat feature that connects you with an expert.

CALL

Of course, sometimes it’s up to us to protect ourselves and one another. If you ever discover an issue with an FDA-regulated food, please report it on the FDA’s site or call their toll-free number 1-888-463-6332.

Frankly, in a country like ours, food should be safe. Period. U.S. PIRG is working to make that happen. By signing this petition, you can help keep this common-sense issue at the forefront of our elected officials' minds.
