In May of 2006 I co-founded MomsRising with a mission of creating a multicultural movement of mothers – and of everyone who has ever had a mother! – to advance family economic security and to end discrimination against mothers. Since then, MomsRising has grown to a million members nationwide, including members in every state in our nation, who according to an analysis we commissioned, mirror the U.S. Census in terms of race and ethnicity.

Jae, Meema, Love, Boid, Aunt Jae, Puzzle, Jane, Grandma Jae, and Mom. All of these names were used for one woman—a woman who loved to live life fully, to skinny dip in mountain lakes, to explore balsam wooded paths, vivid art, and ideas. Gauguin, Picasso, Cezanne, the free Smithsonian museums were regular stops as she brought art to life for my brother and I, her children, as part of our regular diet. Vibrant splashes of colors on museum walls are among the first I remember seeing. She also listened, really listened, to people. And she wasn’t afraid to be heard. An exuberant and joyful singer...

Today April 8th, 2014 marks the second day of a 48-hour fast by 100 women who have come together in D.C. to urge our elected leaders to vote on an immigration reform bill that is fair and inclusive of women, children and families. The fast in the "Courage Cafe" tent on 4th and Jefferson in D.C . is part of a nationwide movement by the We Belong Together women's coalition, in which 1,500 women in 35 states fasted in 24-hour increments in the last month. Three-quarters of all immigrants to the United States are women and children. 5.5 million children live in mixed status households , which...

Confession: I grew up believing that women had mostly achieved equality in the workplace and the world. But when my first child was born, I quickly learned that I was mistaken. My son was absolutely amazing, and he was also born with an immune system deficiency. I had to leave my full-time job. Since my mom was single for much of my childhood, I was haunted by the "what ifs." What if I didn't have a husband with an income and job-based healthcare? My situation could've been a disaster. My son is now healthy, as is my daughter. But not everyone is so lucky. For too many, motherhood is a...

What’s more important than the birth of your child? Baseball. Obviously. Just kidding. April Fools' Day is over! But apparently New York sports radio hosts Craig Carton and Boomer Esiason -- who is also a legendary NFL quarterback -- didn’t get the memo when they lambasted Mets' second baseman Daniel Murphy for taking a THREE-DAY paternity leave. They even had some suggestions for the new dad’s birth plan: "Quite frankly, I would have said, 'C-section before the season starts, I need to be at opening day,'" said NFL Legend Boomer Esiason. REALLY?....REALLY?! Shocker: Athletes who are radio...

“I can remember only a few years back when the MomsRising State of the Union BINGO card was nearly empty. Keep up the incredible work!” --Wendy, MomsRising member Two words you never thought you'd see together: Historic. BINGO. Tuesday night’s State of the Union address and MomsRising's related BINGO game were nothing short of historic. For the first time ever, a President of the United States squarely put the issues that most affect the economic stability of America’s families and of our nation in the spotlight: fair pay, early learning and childcare, the minimum wage, sick days, family...
