Woo hooo!!! The Paid Sick Days Ballot Initiative in Milwaukee, WI won in a landslide victory on Tuesday, with the approval of 68% of voters. This is a huge win for the citizens of Milwaukee, who will now be able to earn paid sick days when this law goes into effect.
This victory has tremendous national significance. Milwaukee is now the third city to pass a paid sick days law, and the huge margin of victory here sends a message to every other municipality, state, and to Congress that the people want paid sick days, and we want them now!
In support of this initiative, MomsRising members handed out 15,000 pieces of “sick or treat” candy on Halloween, contacted leaders to garner their support, and friends told friends to vote YES. Your work significantly contributed to the fantastic work of the Paid Sick Days coalition, lead by 9to5.org.
Thank you for all you’ve done, and we can’t wait to work with you in the coming year to bring policies like Paid Sick Days, Parental Leave, Fair Pay, Breastfeeding rights, and Early Learning to Wisconsin and the country!
Special thanks and congratulations go to Amy and Sangita, and the entire team at 9to5, for their tireless work on this initiative.

January 7, 2009 at 7:24 pm by AnonymousHave you heard how Milwaukee businesses are counteracting this silly law. Less pay, less vacation days, less benifits, less hours. That sounds like a loss to me. When will you people ever be satified with what you have. I don’t have this. I don’t have that. Cry Cry Cry. Lets take it for the business owner. They can afford it. I guess your way of thinking has backfired. Business owners work very hard for what they have. I put in 60 to 80 hours a week to grow my business. No sick time. No vacation days. I get raises only when I work harder. Am I making my point. Hard work is the only way to get rewards. Put away your Robinhood mentality and give your undeserved paid sick days back to your employer. You can either help your employer grow or you can help your employer fail. If your employer fails, where does that leave you? I can’t wait to read your answer.

November 6, 2008 at 6:32 pm by AnonymousI would like to thank you for killing jobs in the city of Milwaukee. My father-in-law has already had it explained to him that his company is going to eliminate part-time positions and reduce vacation time for full-time employees to compensate.
This is one of those ideas that appeared grand on the outside, but you failed to realize that it would have to be nation-wide when implemented. Many jobs will leave the city for subarbs – if we are lucky, some may just move further south…
Take a look at what is happening in the cities of DC and San Francisco – notice how the jobs are moving out, this is what will happen here to.
