    Wanted: More moms in office

    Posted December 2nd, 2011 by

We all know that moms make great elected leaders, but now hear it from those who know first-hand:

Women make up 17 percent of Congress and 24 percent of state legislatures. That puts the US at 69th in the world in the number of women in elected office.
The 2012 Project is a national campaign to elect an unprecedented number of women in the next election, when a presidential race and redistricting overlap for the first time in 20 years. That creates huge opportunities for women – and moms.

If you’re reading this, you should run!

This is a moving video and shows that moms with small children can run for office. We need these voices in Congress!

As much as I strongly believe and have worked tirelessly to increase the number of women in public office, I feel the non-partisan program of 2012 Project inherently does not put forward candidates that represent my views as Pro-choice Democrat MOM.

This video is lovely with its personal stories, but really what we need is what inspired them to run and what challenges they faced as women and esp. as MOMS. Plus women never self select to run. They need to asked. We need to be more assertive in our efforts and not let it be a random thought you have after you watch a video.

Emerge America has more direct training and impact, but then again I am biased.

What a moving video, Stacy! Thanks for gathering such an accomplished and candid crew of elected officials to share their perspectives.

It’s not too late for moms like us in every state to consider running for office next year. Now, who wants to be featured as a talking head the next time a video like this is produced?

Better still, who wants to work toward the day when our daughters don’t need a special invitation to enter the political pipeline??
