The Real Truth About Men and Housework

Posted September 17th, 2009 by Dana Glazer

Okay, time to come clean. When I was filming Dr. Michael Kimmel recently about men and housework, what he said is basically what my wife has been saying for years about me and housework. Guess I’m not alone in this. (Deb, I promise to do better.) Watch this clip and be ready to either laugh or sob.

I definitely understand Dr. Kimmel’s point that moms have traditionally done a lot more of this work and may do it better. But, I also think he misses a chunk of the issue, understandable in a short clip. Men often do things differently, including cleaning, and I think it’s often better to cultivate a partnership than ‘I’ll show you how to do things the “right” way.’ I clean differently than my wife, but it gets done, and a big reason why is that she lets me do it my way, and appreciates it. As a busy two-income couple it has worked well for us.
