I'm a MomsRising member from San Diego who is a college professor working four part-time jobs that don’t offer health coverage. For more than a year, I spent every moment terrified and ridden with anxiety. Unable to get private coverage because of a pre-existing condition, I worried daily about what would happen to our family if we had a medical emergency. Thankfully, my family and I signed up for a new health plan made possible through the Affordable Care Act and we're now covered.

So I was shocked and saddened to learn that some California legislators, who oppose the Affordable Care Act (ACA), have been trying to prevent families, like mine, from getting the affordable health coverage they desperately need by encouraging the spread of misinformation.

Join me in telling all California legislators: "Do the right thing and share correct information with all of your constituents about the new health law, regardless of your political position on the Affordable Care Act."

What's going on? According to national news outlets, some California legislators have used taxpayer money to create purposefully misleading websites sites that provide incorrect or incomplete information about the Affordable Care Act.  Yes, you heard me right. One such website originally resembled the accurate Covered California website, seemingly, with the intent of confusing Californians who may be trying to purchase health insurance on the marketplace.

After initial public outrage, the bogus site's most flagrant mis-truths were removed, but the site still contains highly imbalanced and misleading information. For example, the site provides no information about the consumer protections newly available to all healthcare consumers and it also fails to mention that financial assistance may be available to 2.6 million Californians under the ACA.

Enough is enough. It's time for all California legislators to share accurate information about the new, affordable health coverage options right away: /action.momsrising.org/sign/Cali_healthcare

I personally signed up for healthcare on the exchange and I can’t even begin to explain the relief my husband and I feel. Before the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, I was uninsurable because I had a condition called endometriosis. We were making a lot of decisions about work and life based on health insurance. The stress alone could have warranted a doctor's visit! My husband and I even sold our car to be able to get health insurance, but then I just kept getting denied because of my pre-existing condition.

When I consider the benefits of the new healthcare law, I just feel more protected as a human being, as a consumer, and as a Californian.

Join me in this fight, because together we can make sure California's families continue to get covered and experience the same peace of mind my family feels.
