Uncle Peter’s theory

Posted April 2nd, 2010 by

Meet my Uncle Peter. He’s a really cool guy who happens to be an employee rights lawyer in New York and has talked with more than a thousand women and men about their work lives over the course of his career. He has a theory about why conditions are so difficult for working moms.

Sex, Love and Labor Statistics

Posted September 28th, 2009 by

On NPR this week, I was asked if there’s any good in the new statistics showing that women now outnumber men in the work force.  Maybe.   If it lets us embrace women as breadwinners, I said, that would be healthy.   Even healthier: If men do their part at home and free women to keep the [...]

Work Life: Moving from the Personal to the Political

Posted October 15th, 2008 by

I am glad that the 2008 election has raised the issue of working families. This has been a “sleeper” issue, but no more! What Women Wish Gwen Ifill Could Have Asked

Posted October 9th, 2008 by

Gwen Ifill was hobbled by more than a broken ankle at the vice presidential debate. The rules prevented her from asking any follow-up questions. I work with eleven statewide coalitions representing a million people, all fighting for policies that value families at work. Here are some questions we wish Gwen Ifill had been allowed to ask:
