Great news this week — thanks to your hard work, New Jersey is poised to become the third state in the nation with paid family leave. The NJ State Senate passed the bill 21-15 after receiving over 63,000 (yes that’s 63 THOUSAND) letters as part of a major MomsRising campaign. That’s what I call “naptime activism” in action!
Learn more about the campaign behind this success story here on MomsRising.org, and I also wrote about it on my Mojo Mom blog
Thanks to everyone who added their voices to this important effort. MomsRising campaigns have been instrumental in two of the three states (NJ and WA) that have passed paid family leave. We are making a difference across the country!

You can acquire your own maternity leave pay by applying for short term disability insurance before you conceive. If your employer does not offer this coverage, ask them to make it available via payroll deduction. Since you are paying the premium, there is no cost to your employer.
The paid family leave act enacted in NJ simply puts the premium burden on employees through a payroll deduction. Your employer contributes nothing. Your employer simply acts as the tax (premium) collecting conduit.
Why wait for a legislator to mandate that money be taken out of your check in order to get coverage you want, when you can simply do so yourself?

December 4, 2008 at 3:26 pm by AnonymousI live in New Jersey and work in Pennsylvania, I am 4 1/2 months pregnant and just found out that Pennsylvania does not have paid short term disability or maternity leave laws. This is very frustrating. My work pays 6 weeks at 60% and is taxed. I will be breastfeeding and was hoping to take more time off.
