With my job if I don't work I don't get paid. This makes it very hard. I have to work if I'm sick or not. My Mom just had open heart surgery and I had to take 2 weeks off work unpaid. Is there insurance that I can get that would help with this?
Thank you

@Kathy - thanks for sharing your and your daughter's (very different) experiences. I wonder what caused their change in policy.

What about jobs that don't allow you any time off, much less paid sick time? My daughter works at Macy's and it sure has changed from when I worked there as a student. I had set work days (forget that) and a promise of full time work during summer if I worked during the holidays. I thought it was great, and never even knew how to call in sick - but I don't remember ever needing to either.
My daughter started as an On Call (means any hours they deem to give you and you never know when or how many) on Commission, in the shoe dept. (that alone made me grimace). This means, apparently, that you will be available 24/7 - or maybe my daughter blithely said any hours not realizing that they would schedule her for no regular hours but any old time they wanted, and for as many or few hours as they wanted. Who in the world would want a job like that? Then to top it all off, the other people in the dept. assumed she was just On Call and sent her to the back to clean up, tag shoes, and put away their shoes. So not only would you not want this job, but the other employees diss you by having you do all the work in the back. Great. I'd love to work there. But hey, I found a whole forum for fed-up Macy's workers. I suggested writing Undercover Boss to have them solicit the ceo of Macy's for an appearance, but I guess everyone at the stores knows his face. I'd still do it however. What a shame a good company went so far downhill. It used to be a nice place to work.

I do and will continue to lobby my legislators about protecting working moms through legislating for paid sick days.
I also continue my work in educating moms on safe, effective and cost savings ways that they can use at home for self limiting conditions such as the earache story of the woman who found herself in the emergency room because she couldn't take time off to go to the doctor. Complementary and Alternative Medicine(CAM) includes therapies like homeopathy that moms can use themselves when the situation calls for it and when they can't get off from work or have used their days. Some practices like mine have services called Telehousecalls where you can e-mail or call to talk to me about the problem and get immediate advice on the simplest way to handle it. Not everything that heals is medicine. There are many areas of health that conventional medicine has no answer for, like, colds, viruses and flus. These simple ailments are pesky, not life threatening and account for lost days from school and work. CAM has solutions to shorten the duration and severity and most importantly, prevent these health issues from occurring and from recurring. There is a whole world of alternatives in healthcare that moms can be educated in to save time, money, work days and worries! Remember, since the beginning of time, the Original Primary Healthcare Provider has been the mother. Empower yourself! AskDrNancy@aol.com
