As you can probably guess, I really appreciate the kind words. Thank you.

@dana, I totally agree that dads are too often left out of the conversation. I'll check out your film!

@marisol, I'm reading Elizabeth Gilbert's new book, "Committed," which has a fabulous section on the importance of AUNTIES--women (like the author) who choose not to have children but become part of the social support system of the women who do. You might enjoy the book.

Katrina-

What an incredibly thoughtful and thought-provoking blog. I, took, bristle a bit at the negative comments I often receive from reactions to my own blogs and work and I know how you feel.

However, what you did here is great because, without being defensive, you included these naysayer comments into the dialogue and that's what's important here. The challenge is to keep up the conversation because that's the only way things are going to change when it comes to issues like family/work balance.

Lastly, I personally appreciate your inclusion of dads in this debate. Too often these issues are considered 'women's issues' and unless we can all work at them together we're never going to get anywhere. So, hats off to you, Katrina. Keep up the fire!

Thanks, Katrina, for writing this thoughtful, important piece. I'm a childless, single woman, who's not terribly interested in having children. But I see from my friends and co-workers who do have kids that in addition to being rewarding and wonderful, parenthood is a difficult, challenging responsibility. Thanks for reminding me and others how ridiculous our individualistic society can get -- without immediately seeming so! As a fan of the human race and as an aunt and friend, I'm committed to taking up MY responsibility to care for the next generation, whether my children or not, and their parents.
