Ruth, having access to paid national maternity leave is not something anyone is arguing with. Governments FORCING women, only women, to not work after having a child is the issue. We have to assert that we cannot be ordered around by anyone solely because we are women. The leave and the pay should be there and each woman should choose what is best for her.

I think that this is a great step toward changing maternity leave. I think it is about time that women get the recognition that they are carrying, delivering and nurturing children. No matter how liberal you may be, you can not discount the fact that in America women are not respected on that level. Recently, I have become so fired up about this issue over maternity leave and I haven't started a family yet. I have always assumed that because women fought so hard for equal rights and equality that we received paid time off when giving birth to a child. Well, WE DON'T! How is that not oppression?
Sometimes I think that women over the decades have tried to make women equal to men. Women have continued to fight for equality compared to how men are treated. Hello, we are not men! We are women and without us there would not be any more men.
I don't think that Europe/Sweden is setting women back I think that they are trying to set a new standard and value within business, families, and women. Women should get the time and it should be paid.
