ACT NOW! Budget Cuts Would Deny 570,000 California Children Health Coverage

    Posted July 13th, 2009 by

Proposed state budget cuts to the Healthy Families Program remain at $90 million. If this cut is included in the final budget package, an estimated 570,000 children would lose their only source of affordable health coverage, unless funding from outside sources is secured. In fact, the Managed Risk Medical Insurance Board (MRMIB) would freeze enrollment of children into California’s successful Healthy Families Program beginning July 17th! That’s in 4 days!

TAKE ACTION TO SAVE HEALTHY FAMILIES NOW! Click here to tell your legislators not to cut children’s health in California, and contact the Governor here.

The Governor and the Legislature have the power and responsibility to prevent an enrollment freeze in this program. Alternate budget solutions can be found before July 17th that would protect children’s health coverage. If they continue to fail, the consequences will be severe. Kids won’t have health coverage, they will get sicker, and some children could even die as parents are forced to delay accessing health care until it’s too late, simply because they can’t afford it.

KIDS WILL DIE: Along with many of our children’s health allies, the 100% Campaign and PICO California have created a website – http://www.kidswilldie.com – to help fight the draconian proposals and to protect the critically important Healthy Families Program.

On behalf of The Children’s Partnership and the 100% Campaign, I’d like to thank all the MomsRising.org members in California for their steadfast work to ensure that every child has access to health coverage.

i have a story, had really forgotten it ,and think that it may be relevant today. Decades ago my first husband after 8 years of marriage and 2 babies decided that he had found his “soulmate”I met him at college.
I had a “good” lawyer because there was no way to save the marriage.
However he was careless ,forgot to freeze the accounts. I got on a train with 2 babies ,no health insurance,$100.00 ,and when i got “home” collapsed with pneumonia. I had not expected this, was very naive,
and #1 aside from promising to “support” the children disappeared from my life. later he and his mistress/wife went into business and made fortunes. Of course that might be her money or maybe not. I confess to stupidity about business, did rebuild my life, remarried, went into business, and did lots of community work. As the law stands now the father of my children owes me nothing even if i am homeless.
Now i want a review of divorce poverty because even today i hear of cases of divorced women married sometimes 25 years who are choosing between chemo and food. The male has “gone missing”. The problem of divorce poverty is not the same as single moms who are unmarried altho that may be something we can investigate. Women must succeed.
Men should cooperate and may need gentle or not so gentle pressure to get the situation under control.
    Feedback???
    Muriel
