Trump Budget Proposal Is ‘Dangerous and Short-Sighted, Will Exacerbate Hardship’

Statement from Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, CEO and executive director of MomsRising, an online and on-the-ground organization of more than one million mothers and their families, on the Trump Administration’s budget blueprint.

“The budget proposal unveiled by the Trump administration today is completely out of line with our country’s priorities and needs. The administration has put together a budget that would callously cut the programs struggling families rely on in order to pay for the massive tax cuts it gave to the wealthy and mega-corporations. This proposal is dangerous and short-sighted and will exacerbate hardship in this country.

“Trump’s budget would slash funding for essential programs like SNAP, Medicaid, housing assistance and more. It would create work requirements for vital health care and nutrition programs, a tried-and-failed policy that will cause families to fall deeper into poverty. Work requirements connected to housing, nutrition or health care perpetuate poverty and inequality; jeopardize the health of families; disproportionately harm women, children, people with disabilities, and communities of color; undermine our economy; and do nothing to help anyone find or keep a job. Instead of creating barriers to housing, health care and nutrition, we should be making real investments in programs that create jobs and job training, provide high-quality affordable childcare, and assist those most in need.

“This budget proposal furthers the administration’s damaging and scary political agenda, which the American people do not support. A majority of women, moms and people in this country oppose cuts to Medicaid and SNAP because they know these programs help families access the health care and food they need to live healthy and productive lives. Despite this overwhelming opposition, Republicans in Congress and the White House keep trying to cuts these vital programs to pay for the tax breaks they gave wealthy individuals and large corporations. SNAP is one of the best tools our country has for combating hunger. President Trump’s budget proposal will make our families hungrier and force them deeper into poverty, while wreaking havoc on our economy.

“Finally, while we wish we could point to the paid leave portion of the Trump budget as a step in the right direction, it is not. It has insufficient coverage and scope to even touch addressing the need of families in America.

“On the whole rather than building a stronger, more prosperous nation, this proposal would do lasting harm to our families and our economy. A suitable budget proposal would invest in working families, not add to their stress and suffering. We should institute policies that create a brighter future for our children, not put their well-being at risk and leave them drowning in debt. The moms of America will urge Congress to reject this damaging budget and instead prioritize anti-hunger, housing, health, education, disaster relief and other vitally important social service programs that boost our economy and make life better for all those struggling to make ends meet.”
