Statement “We are alarmed and horrified by reports that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is considering formalizing a policy of separating parents from their children when families come to this country seeking protection or asylum, and by complaints that DHS has already done so in several cases. This practice is heartless and shameful and a gross violation of fundamental human rights. Children and families fleeing violence, who seek protection and asylum in our country, deserve to be treated with compassion, dignity and respect.

Statement “Today, in a desperate attempt to claim a single legislative victory in 2017, President Donald Trump signed the GOP’s atrocious tax bill into law. Trump ran on the promise that he would stand up for working families, yet the legislation he signed today will plunge the country deeper into debt, cause the deficit to skyrocket, hurt our economy, and devastate the programs that support our health, education, food and nutrition, housing and much more -- all to benefit big corporations and enrich the President’s family and wealthy Republican donors.

Statement “It is truly appalling that the continuing resolution Congress passed today to fund the government through January 19 fails to include adequate funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and protections for DREAMers. As a result, millions of families will face fear and uncertainty over the holidays, unsure about the future of their children’s health insurance or what their legal status will be in 2018. This is unacceptable. As a nation, we can and must be better than this.

Statement “The tax plan Congress passed today, on a partisan basis, is an insult to our country’s working families. This atrocious bill was written hastily and in secret, then pushed through to a vote despite overwhelming public opposition. Its aim is clear: to cut taxes for corporations and wealthy individuals at the expense of hard-working families. This is a disgraceful piece of legislation that will be a disaster for our nation and our economy if it is signed into law.

Statement “Our country’s failure to allow all workers to earn paid sick days has created a crisis for working moms and families. It is truly shameful that more than 40 million workers cannot earn any paid sick days – and low-wage workers are the hardest hit. But the Workflex in the 21st Century Act is not the solution we need. In fact, it would be a huge step backward for the country, undermining state and local progress in letting workers earn paid sick days and eliminating the certainty and flexibility that real paid sick time and fair scheduling laws provide.

Statement “Last night, U.S. Senate Republicans made it clear that their loyalties lie with big corporations and the wealthiest 1 percent, not with moms, women, working families, or our economy. The tax plan they passed would punish the middle class, devastate essential programs that boost our health care, nutrition and education; and undermine our economy.

Statement “The substitute paid sick days measure Governor Hogan introduced yesterday is unacceptable. It covers too few workers, phases in too slowly, and the waiver it contains constitutes a huge and unacceptable loophole that would weaken it even further. It would do nothing for too many of the 700,000 workers in Maryland who do not currently have any paid sick days they can use to care for themselves or their children when they get sick.

Statement “The rule the Agriculture Department released today is grossly irresponsible and a significant step backward for our country and for our children’s health. The updated school nutrition standards have been working. Parents support them, kids benefit greatly from them, and the vast majority of schools have been able to comply with them.

Statement “A whopping one-in-four women say they have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace. One-in-three women have experienced some form of sexual violence in her lifetime. Almost 23 million women have been victims of rape or attempted rape in the United States.   “We believe women. We believe facts.
