Statement “Today, the DC Council voted to pass the nation’s most progressive paid family and medical leave insurance bill. Working families across the District are celebrating the fact that when this legislation is implemented, nonprofit and private-sector workers in DC will be able to use paid family and medical leave to care for a new child, treat a serious illness, or care for a sick relative.

Statement “The New Jersey legislature attempted to stand up for the rights of incarcerated pregnant women, children and others by passing S51, which would have restricted the use of solitary confinement in state prisons. By vetoing this important legislation, Governor Christie has shown that he has no concern for the well-being of the most vulnerable among us. Instead of listening to the overwhelming evidence and the members of the legislature, the Governor has chosen to stick his head in the sand and pretend that the problem is nonexistent.

Statement “Donald Trump has named a person, U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions, who has a history of racist, misogynistic and bigoted behavior, to be the U.S. Attorney General, which is the chief law enforcement officer of the nation. Over his career, Sessions has called a white civil rights attorney a ‘disgrace to his race’ and prosecuted activists, including Albert Turner, a former aide to Martin Luther King Jr. for trying to register black voters. He once joked about the Ku Klux Klan, sayng he ‘used to think they were OK’ until he found out some of them were ‘pot smokers.’

Statement “This morning we woke up to a very different America than the polls predicted. Many of us are reeling. Some of our children have difficult questions about their own safety, about their friends, and about the future of our country. But moms never give up, and we never stop fighting to make sure that the United States is a place where every child and family, every mom and dad, and every person can thrive.

Statement Today, November 1st, is Latina Equal Pay Day - a day to mark how Latinas in the United States have to work ALL of 2015 and until November 1st of 2016 to finally earn as much as white men earned in 2015 alone.  On average, Latina women make only 54 cents for every dollar paid to a white man for equal work.  MomsRising argues that this incredibly large pay gap, the highest in the nation, hurts women, families and our national economy and MomsRising marks the day to highlight the urgent need for action to close the wage gap for Latina women.
