I had been without health insurance for some time and was attempting to get individual coverage. When I submitted my list of medications I was immediately shunted into a different category. Despite the fact that one of the medications I was on is commonly used to treat diabetes, I did not have diabetes. My doctor wrote letters to my potential insurers to assure them that I took the medication for a different reason. Despite that fact, the premiums I was offered were well more than half of my monthly income as they don't care why I took the medication, it was on a list which made me an undesirable client. I couldn't afford any of the insurance offered to me from several different providers and so have been uninsured for over five years.
