2014 Food Wins!

With the year coming to a close, we took a look back and can say unequivocally, it’s time to show off, take a bow and celebrate 2014 for all we accomplished, together, on food related issues.

We’re Showing Off…

In 2014, MomsRising and its Good Food Force members worked in support of healthy school lunch.

During the summer of 2014, Congress attempted to roll back the new nutrition guideline for school lunch that Moms supported through an amendment in the appropriations bill that allowed schools to opt out. Via #SaveSchoolLunch, MomsRising, and its members, voiced their displeasure, placing pressure on Congress. Not only did we earn upwards of 4 million impressions online, but member stories were also read, and featured, on the house floor during their debate.

MomsRising, and its members, helped block that amendment during Congress’ summer session.

Yet, our fight was not over.

In December, some members of Congress made a separate attempt during the Omnibus/Continuing Resolution process to allow schools to opt out of the new nutrition standards. MomsRising sent nearly 30,000 letters to Congress and hosted another tweetchat that earned an additional 1 million impressions to save school lunch.

MomsRising also delivered storybooks with testimonials from moms and dads; handy resources for teachers, school administrators, cafeteria staff and parents; and profiles of schools that have succeeded in making the new changes to every member of Congress.

Moreover, thanks in large part to MomsRising’s mobilization, 200,000 comments were sent to the USDA in support of strong nutritional standards for food and beverages sold in school snack lines, vending machines, and school stores.

Guess what? Your voices were heard!

Take a Bow…

The core nutrition provisions were saved, and remain in place, thanks to MomsRising, its partners and Good Food Force members.

What's more, the new rules ban sugary drinks and junk food advertising in all public schools! Our children will no longer receive mixed messages!
