TAKE ACTION: 31 Million Children

October 16, 2013
Yesterday was my son, Ethan’s, 7th birthday, and it wasn't a sure thing he'd make it this far. I wanted to take this opportunity to share my family's story with the Wellness Wonder Team to give you an idea of why I have become so passionate about the need for a better healthcare system in the...

The Children of Head Start

October 16, 2013
As an assistant Head Start teacher, I see the impact of the program every day. Our program in Chicago has children who would continue to have rotting teeth and no childhood immunizations without the support and requirements of the program. Children who are non-communicative, developmentally delayed...

Standing with the President for the Affordable Care Act

October 11, 2013
It’s really hot in the Rose Garden and I am standing behind President Obama, trying not to fidget. I don’t know where to look, so I stare at the back of his head. It’s a nice head. He’s talking about the Affordable Health Care Act, which everyone can start signing up for today, October 1. When I...

Honeybees and Groundwater: Canaries in the Pesticide Coalmine

October 9, 2013
Researchers increasingly draw links between pesticides and serious illnesses like cancer, Parkinson’s disease, birth defects, and a host of others, as well as impacts on aquatic life, such as the Potomac River’s very own intersex fish. Lately the mystery surrounding worldwide beehive loss is leading researchers to question when, where and how pesticides are used and how they affect bees. Healthcare, Shutdown, Budget...Why Should I Care?

October 8, 2013
On October 1, 2013, a historical accomplishment for socioeconomic parity for all Americans but in particular for African Americans and minorities and the beginning of a happier, healthier, more equal America for ALL totally happened. Also on October 1, 2013, most major functions of the United States government shutdown. For my those living under a rock, October 1st was the official beginning of the (first) “open enrollment period” for Health Insurance Marketplaces around the country. For all of my non-political readers, it was also the first day of the government’s 2014 Fiscal Budget.

This Is The Face… #StoptheStigma

October 8, 2013
This is the face of depression. And this: Pretty hard to believe, right? Not really. People expect depression to look a certain way, to sound a certain way. And it doesn’t. It’s taken me a LONG time to write this. I have known it was necessary but I have been hesitant. Because I did not know where...
