Editor’s Note: More than 1,200 women from 70 organizations are fasting in 35 states for immigration reform that keeps families together and treats women fairly this month. The month of fasting will culminate April 7-9th, 2014 when 100 women will fast in DC for 48 hours.

On Monday, I stood in front of the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma because I can’t imagine living with the fear that my son could be torn from me at any moment.

In the few hours that I stood in front of the detention center gates, I knew that hundreds of families were being torn apart by deportation. Every day, 1,100 people are deported, leaving children without parents, husbands without wives, grandmothers without grandkids.

Outside the gates, under grey skies, I stood in solidarity with all the parents inside and the 1,499 other women who are fasting this month with We Belong Together.

It's time for the few obstructionists in Congress responsible for this pain and suffering to listen to the American people and the 1,500 women who fasted with We Belong Together this month. It's time to ACT FAST for immigration reform that keeps families together and treats women fairly.
