Connecticut and the Nation are Better Off with Statewide Paid Sick Days Law in Place, Moms Movement Leader Says

“When Governor Dannel Malloy signed An Act Mandating Employers Provide Paid Sick Leave to Employees, Connecticut blazed a trail by adopting America’s first statewide paid sick days law.  Now fewer people in the state will get the flu with their burgers, and fewer moms will have to send sick children to school or daycare or lose a paycheck if they stay home to provide care.  Connecticut now becomes an example for the rest of the country.

With our local partners and national allies, MomsRising worked for years to help secure this victory.  We collected stories from our members all across Connecticut.  Two of our members testified in support of the new law this year, and many others personally delivered hand sanitizer along with personal stories to legislators.  MomsRising members generated thousands of emails and letters in support of the law, reached out to media, activated others in their communities, and wrote thousands of thank you notes after the legislation was passed.  We are so happy that it paid off for workers in the state.

At MomsRising, we hear from members all over the country every day about the struggles they face without basic workplace flexibility.  For Connecticut workers, some of those struggles will now be solved.  Moms all across America deserve the same.

Paid sick days are a logical, common-sense, fair policy that everyone deserves.  We all get sick.  When we’re worried about our kids’ health or our own health, we shouldn’t also have to worry about whether we’ll be able to pay the rent or put food on the table.

We thank every legislator who voted for this law, and especially Governor Malloy, who fought for its passage and made this win a priority for this young Administration.  The state and the nation are better off because he did.”
