I was unemployed for several years after having worked steadily for over 15 years. First, I had to switch fields and get started in a new one. That took a year. Later I suffered from depression. It was so bad I was not able to work. Someone should have told me about SSI. Getting back into the job market took another career change. That re-entry was unsteady and I went through many months of being unemployed. The longer I was not employed and the older I got, the harder it was to get a job. We cannot let the long-term unemployed become the permanently unemployed. They are a new class of wasted human resources.
