They are your children & mine
As my elementary school boss & principal told me 30 yrs ago, we don't choose our students. Parents send them as they are, they send the best they have. Many didn't sleep in a bed last night, but slept where they fell asleep on the floor, without a cozy blanket, likely having had a bag of potato chips for supper & no hot breakfast or even a bowl of cereal waiting for breakfast. The Federal Free/Reduced funds have guaranteed every child receives 2 meals a day during school year, as well as combining with local & state in NC (sadly,at least for now-another story) to ensure a "lunch bag" for the weekends. This is not something to be congratulated for -- it is the minimum required in one of the richest countries in the world. For a few self-serving, petty, stubborn little newbies in the House of Representatives to hold all these lives & thousands more citizens & programs hostage in this stand-off, is ludicrous. We've come a long, long way from my elementary school days when, for free, hungry kids with no money could help themselves to a huge bowl full of peanut butter & honey & a stack of white bread. And we CANNOT go back. The prophet Micah said it best, we are to "do justly, to love mercy & walk humbly with (our) God."
