Taking Care of Mom

My husband and I recently retired and six months later brought his mother to live with us. She suffers from Alzheimer's disease along with other health problems and needs full-time care and supervision. We finally have been able to get some help through Medicaid (a home health aide, adult day care, respite). This has made it possible for us to continue to keep her in a family setting. We know, however, that we may at some point need to consider a nursing home. I pray that Medicaid will still be available to cover this cost. We are living on a pension and trying to insure that we have enough in savings to cover our own long-term care needs. If we had to pay the cost of Mom's care, we would be left with no resources for our own old age. I am very worried about the possibility of losing these benefits as I listen to the proposals not only in Congress but in our own state legislature. Medicaid is a lifeline for us as it is for many families who care for elderly relatives. Please preserve the benefits for this population.
