I paid into S.S. and need it now!

I grew up in a proud military family. I lived with my grandfather on the U.S. Coast Guard Academy when he was the Superintent there. My father was a carrer officer, as well. My grandfather, an Admiral, was a veteran of both World Wars, and my father a veteran of WWII. There is a life size painting of my grandfather in the Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

My husband and I developed a successful business and were able to provide well for our two children. We, of course, paid our share of taxes as well as paid into Social Security, as well.

But just as they were ready to attend college we had to file for bankruptcy.

We have struggled ever since. From living in the finest part of town to the roughest.

We are both senior citizens now, and my husband, 72, is dying of last stage cancer. We have been struggling with our small Social Security payments and keeping my husband alive and out of pain with Medicare!

I know what it was like to be wealthy, and how little affect a higher tax rate would mean to my life style. Furthermore, most wealthy people live on capital gains rather than salary, which is considerably less at 15%, than the portion the rest of us pay.

My grandfather and father would roll over in their graves if they knew what was happening in the country they fought for.

My husband and I depend on our small Social Security income and Medicare. I think it is unbelievable that the "Religous Right" has the nerve to ask for a lower tax rate when most of them pay only 15% capital gains, anyway. I know what it is like to be both wealthy and poor. I don't know how I am going to survive when my husband dies!
