Food is not a luxury item

As a health coach, parent and grandparent, I am crucially aware of the impact of nutrition on the mind, body and emotional stability of our children. Children in our country are facing an unprecedented surge of obesity, diabetes, and a host of other health issues due to bad diet. Bad foods are cheaper than healthy food and are therefore more available because the government subsidizes corn, wheat, hormone filled dairy and other food industries that pump corn syrup, bad fats, bleached wheat and other unhealthy fillers into the food supply. This is going to cost our country billions of dollars and unnecessary suffering in the future. Why subsidize these corporations with our tax dollars, but not vegetable and fruit growers, while we simultaneously reduce food stamps? This is petty, greedy and thoughtless behavior on the part of our politicians. Families, elderly and disabled citizens can barely get by as it is and are suffering. As Americans who foot the bill for all of this, we must stand up and demand that sanity is reintroduced into our governing policies. Please, do not cut SNAP. This is an issue of national security because without healthy children we have no future or security in our country.
