My son has autism. He will be 12 on Saturday and he is good at reading, spelling and math. He was first diagnosed and entered the special education system at the age of about 9 months. He received special education, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, 5 different appointments a week. These were covered through the Medicaid program, as I am a single parent and would not have been able to afford the services. As a toddler, his teacher began teaching him sign language. They did not think he would ever learn to talk. Thanks to our wonderful teachers and therapists, and the medicaid program which makes it possible, he now attends school with his peers. He enjoys watching Nascar and Monster Jam. He is reading above his grade level and no longer requires speech therapy.
