Why Should the Insured Care About Healthcare Reform?

President Barack Obama is making his case for healthcare reform in various town hall meetings across the country. Most recently, he had a bullet-point-style message on why the insured should support his healthcare plan.
“* No Discrimination for Pre-Existing Conditions: Insurance companies will be prohibited from refusing you coverage because of your medical history.
* No Exorbitant Out-of-Pocket Expenses, Deductibles or Co-Pays: Insurance companies will have to abide by yearly caps on how much they can charge for out-of-pocket expenses.
* No Cost-Sharing for Preventive Care: Insurance companies must fully cover, without charge, regular checkups and tests that help you prevent illness, such as mammograms or eye and foot exams for diabetics.
* No Dropping of Coverage for Seriously Ill: Insurance companies will be prohibited from dropping or watering down insurance coverage for those who become seriously ill.
* No Gender Discrimination: Insurance companies will be prohibited from charging you more because of your gender.
* No Annual or Lifetime Caps on Coverage: Insurance companies will be prevented from placing annual or lifetime caps on the coverage you receive.
* Extended Coverage for Young Adults: Children would continue to be eligible for family coverage through the age of 26.
* Guaranteed Insurance Renewal: Insurance companies will be required to renew any policy as long as the policyholder pays their premium in full. Insurance companies won’t be allowed to refuse renewal because someone became sick.”
No wonder the healthcare companies are trying to scare the bejesus out of senior citizens and others. Who doesn’t agree that these are good ways to reform the system?
By the way, MSN Money had a frightening story on how 62 percent of personal bankruptcies in the United States in 2007 were due to medical problems. Even more scary, 78 percent of those filers had medical insurance at the start of their illnesses, including 60.3 percent who had PRIVATE health insurance (presumably tied to paid work) — not Medicare or Medicaid. Yikes!

July 30, 2009 at 12:38 am by chrisRegardless on if you agree with the President, he seems incapable of convincing the American public of his healthcare plan. Almost 70% of the public dislike the plan and it is driving his poll numbers down. If he keeps this up he will end up being a one-term President and give the Republicans control of the White House again.
A recent report showed that 70% of the major news media stories about healthcare reform were positive towards the President’s plan. So how is it that Americans are not accepting the news reports about the plan? America is just not buying it and it is not the healthcare companies that are the problem, it’s the way that the President, the Speaker, and other Democrats are presenting this plan. They appear from my observation to be incohesive, confused, ill-prepared, and partisan. Worse, they are beginning to sound more incompetent and arrogant than the Bush administration. Our President may have been a great orator on the campaign trail, but he inspires no one as he tries to persuade us towards his plan. His gestures make me feel like he is talking down to me and his contradictions on the issues make him look less confident and less convincing that this program is good for the country. We all know it and are seeing it crumble around him. Pray it doesn’t take down his administration.
