Hi all,
I have another live blog chat scheduled on my blog, MotherTalkers.com, for this Thursday, April 28 at 9 a.m. PT/12 p.m ET. This time, we will be chatting with Stacy Mason, campaign manager of The 2012 Project, a national and non-partisan campaign by Rutgers University to get more women to run for office.
Stacy can speak to us about the reasons why more women don’t run for office, and encourage you if you are on the fence. Please join us, or if you can’t, drop your questions here. Thank you all!

April 28, 2011 at 10:40 am by Terri VanMeenen-MisfeldtIn October my daughter was 9 months old and I was staying at home to care for her, looking for full-time employment, and working toward completion of an MA in Sociology after being diagnosed with Stage 4 Melanoma a year and a half earlier. While I had plenty on my plate already, I decided to run for city council too! I did not make it to the run-off election, but managed to obtain almost 17% of the vote against 3 other male candidates, even though many in the community had not known me previously.
The experience was very rewarding; I met many people in my community, have become much more involved and connected to women leaders in the community, and my concerns and opinions are respected and addressed by council members. It pains me to see young women isolated in their homes caring for children saying they don’t have time for politics! We MUST make time to be involved! It sets a wonderful example for our children, and our childrens’ lives depend on it!
I plan to run for office again, and actively support campaigns of candidates who agree to address issues I care about. While our family budget may not allow for donations, I can certainly take several hours to phone bank or knock on doors. My husband gets quality time with our daughter, while I meet and connect with wonderful neighbors on issues that concern us all!
I encourage all women to start acting locally and think globally. We can and are making a huge impact around the world! American women need to wake up and get in the game! We need to build strong bonds with our communities and each other in order to create lasting changes that protect our loved ones!
