The Death of BPA?

    Posted November 23rd, 2009 by

At MomsRising, we’ve been working for years to keep kids safe from toxic Bisphenol-A (BPA) in food containers and bottles. We’ve generated tens of thousands of letters to Congress and state legislatures, and sent pages of petition signatures to manufacturers. We’ve made progress — but we still have a ways to go!

The Food and Drug Administration is reviewing BPA, and they are scheduled to release their recommendations next week. The more of us working together right now to finally rid food containers of toxic BPA, the better.  That’s why we’re partnering with CREDO Action on this last-minute push to keep our food safe. There’s nothing quite as good as doubling down to increase the odds of getting toxics out of our food containers.

Now, it’s really time for action. Join us in signing CREDO Action’s petition to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg urging a ban of BPA in all food packaging!

Did you know that Bisphenol-A (BPA) has been implicated in everything from miscarriages to cancer to sexual dysfunction? And it can be found in your food containers! BPA is in a broad range of food packaging including baby bottles, water bottles, almost all soda can liners and many other types of packaging.

Make no mistake, BPA gets into our food: Consumer Reports and the Environmental Working Group have both studied the issue and found BPA in many of the canned products they tested, including infant formula, vegetables, soda and soup. And we are what we eat. BPA is present in detectable levels in over 90% of Americans’ bodies.

Hundreds of studies have confirmed the dangers of even low-level doses of BPA. The risks are severe enough that the prestigious Endocrine Society released a special statement last summer explicitly warning that low-level exposure to BPA can adversely affect female and male reproduction, thyroid function, and metabolism, and could even increase obesity.

There is already overwhelming evidence that BPA is dangerous to our health. It has no place in our food, or our children’s food, even at the lowest levels. It’s time for the FDA to put people’s safety above corporate profits. When the FDA releases its BPA review on November 30, the agency should call for an immediate ban on the use of BPA in any and all food packaging, including baby bottles and can linings, and should further require companies to fully test and disclose the nature of all chemical ingredients used in food packaging and linings.

Let the FDA know it’s not OK for bottles or food packaging to contain dangerous chemicals. Tell FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg that enough is enough, join us in signing CREDO Action’s petition, which they’ll deliver to the FDA next week. With Thanksgiving here, we know everyone’s busy, but we’ve only got a few days left to gather signatures, so please sign the petition today.

My disabled son, on SSI, suffers prostatitis and recently had an operation for kidney stones. For years, he ate fruits, vegetables, beans and soups from cans. Like many on SSI, he goes through maybe 100 cans of food a month.
Recently, after learning that BPA actually causes the ailments he suffers, my son stopped eating canned foods. Within weeks, all his symptoms–painful symptoms he has suffered for ten years–have completely disappeared. The reason? He is no longer ingesting BPA.
Thousands of impoverished people in the US are homeless, in shelters or group homes, with no ability to store food in refrigerators or cook food on stovetops. They are forced to eat out of cans at each meal. Shelters serve food daily to the hungry from cans donated in canned food drives. The resulting physical problems caused by BPA cost the taxpayer millions of dollars to treat.
I believe our FDA is complicit in harming the health of the poor by not banning BPA. Compounding the problem, the government then siphons taxpayer money to help the poor with resulting prostate and kidney operations, hospitalization, and medication.
I want to know why the FDA permits a chemical like BPA to be used in food containers when it is so dangerous. I want to know why the FDA doesn’t ban BPA now that it is known to cause widespread medical problems.
The chemical companies are in bed with the lawmakers and the FDA. They are mercenaries committing genocide, and the FDA is the accomplice.
My family has vowed not to eat canned foods until BPA is banned.
    What else can we do?

Scary facts about preservatives and artificial ingredients… Don’t give them to your children!!

As a parent, you certainly have a good reason to suspect that artificial ingredients in food and beverages, are affecting your children’s behavior. Here’s an article from Time, by Claudia Williams, which points out some hard cold facts, which should make you reconsider what you give your kids to eat and drink.

    http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1659835,00.html

A carefully designed study released September 06, 2007 in a leading British medical journal, called “The Lancet,” shows that a variety of common food dyes, and the preservative sodium benzoate – an ingredient in many soft drinks, fruit juices, and other foods – causes some children to become more hyperactive and distractible than usual.

Parents, what other options are out there? NOT MANY, YET!!

However Moms and Dads you’ll be happy to know there’s a company called Yoli which gearing up for it’s official pre-launch this fall, they have come out with a new healthy drink alternative for kids and adults alike called, “Truth” that will be released in the fall of 2009

Down with BPA. I have been interested in this for some time now. When my sister had her baby girl we found that her bottle had it. After more and more came out about it we took notice and have continued to advocate against using any products with BPA in it. Great Post.
