    Bring on the radical homemakers

…At some point, of course, I realized I wasn’t happy. I was trapped. I had money, but not time. It was like being surrounded by food, and dying of thirst.

It turns out that there is a way out of this mess. There are people all over this country–both women and men–who have made a conscious decision to value their time more than their money. Against the formidable current of popular culture, they have decided that this may be the only life they will ever have, and they’re going to live it fully.

    It’s National Farmer’s Market Week August 2-8, 2009

This week is National Farmer’s Market Week which is really important to note. As we push for Health care reform and look at all the illnesses that affect our families and communities, we have to look at the impact of the way we eat today. There have been plenty of national studies telling us that [...]

Congratulations! Last week California MomsRising.org members sent over 3,600 letters to Governor Schwarzenegger and our legislators in Sacramento to oppose a proposed wait-list for kids’ healthcare coverage. Our voices were heard!

    Medi-Cal saved my daughter’s life!

Posted December 9th, 2008 by Amber - Porterville CA

My daughter Ellie was born with reflux, a seemingly innocent condition that many children have and outgrow. But Ellie was different. She would choke and turn blue, she would become dehydrated from not being able to keep anything down, and she had pneumonia by the time she was 10 days old.

Healthy Families has been a health-saver, if not a life-saver, for my family. I’m self-employed and have to provide my own insurance. Four years ago, my older daughter’s school wanted her put on ADD meds to see if they would help with her learning disabilities.

The first day of school (with pink eye)

My two children have received excellent public health benefits in San Francisco since before they were born. I qualified for no-cost Medi-Cal during both pregnancies though my partner and I were both self-employed. After my children were born, this coverage has allowed me to focus on taking care of our kids – now ages 5 and 2.5 – rather than get a job just for the healthcare benefits.

The long term impact of my girls’ year without healthcare

Posted October 20th, 2008 by Megan - Tustin CA

I moved back to Tustin, CA in December 2006 after leaving a man who had been abusive and a marriage that was falling apart. While I was looking for work, we were on Medi-Cal but I did not want to stay on for long because I felt others needed it more than me.

KidsRising? Your Kids’ Voices Needed to Move CA Legislators

Posted July 30th, 2008 by Julia Goodman

Right now, approximately 763,000 kids don’t have healthcare coverage — a number that is going up each year. In fact, now 1 in 8 kids nationwide don’t have healthcare coverage, many more than just last year. Despite the outcry from many Californians, the legislature just isn’t getting the message that all kids need healthcare coverage.

Governor Schwarzenegger’s Newly Released “Health Care Reform” Package Leaves out Coverage for California Children

Posted July 24th, 2008 by JennyKattlove

Last Friday, Governor Schwarzenegger released a proposal for Phase 1 of “Health Care Reform” in California [visit the (temporary) website http://opr.ca.gov/temp/ for details of the plan]. Disappointingly, this first phase of health care reform omits any policy that would expand health coverage to children.
