Yesterday, armed with nothing but pacifiers, we stormed the barricades of Congress.  Slightly hot and sticky Washington D.C. area MomsRising members delivered the healthcare stories of hundreds of MomsRising members to the U.S. Senate.  Our calling cards were pacifiers to drive home our message that “We won’t be pacified until our broken healthcare system is fixed!”

Not only did the pacifiers get the attention of Senate staff, they also attracted the media.  CNN, the Washington Times, and Talk Radio News Service followed us throughout the halls of Congress.  Check out a great video news report of the delivery here.

Moms, dads, and grandparents from all over the area helped out.  What brought them there?  One mom has a child with special needs and spends one day every week fighting with her insurance company to cover essential services.  Another single mom was struggling to pay for health coverage provided by her employer. Others just wanted to help represent the over one million MomsRising members across the country who care deeply about this issue, but can’t be here in D.C. in person.

And special thanks to the thousands of members who backed us up by sending a letter yesterday to their Senators telling them to look out for MomsRising members delivering pacifiers and books of healthcare stories.  We felt very supported by the whole membership.

With the Senate’s announcement yesterday that they are postponing the vote on healthcare reform until after their August recess, grassroots efforts to show that the American people want health reform are more urgent than ever.

Please continue to keep up the pressure to fix our broken healthcare system from whatever community you live in.  To find out about upcoming local MomsRising meetings with Senators or their staff in your state, check here.

Thanks for your work on behalf of our nation’s families!  And CHARGE!
