Each person in my family has a pre-existing condition. Even my seven-year-old son.

From my high blood pressure, to my husband's cholesterol, to my son's severe health issues as an infant—just a few years ago we were basically uninsurable on the individual market.

So, you can imagine how relieved I was about the provision in the Affordable Care Act that protects us from being charged more or denied coverage because of these pre-existing conditions.

This is why I've been working so hard to get the word out to anyone and everyone who will listen about the new benefits and protections under this new law. And why I've been so inspired by the creativity of our members who are helping to get the word out about healthcare reform as well!

With just 11 days until the end of this year's open enrollment period at healthcare.gov, I've been amazed at the initiative our members are taking to help spread the word about new affordable heath coverage options.

Jeanette in New Jersey told me,

The women at my church had a Fashion and Wellness event coming up and decided to include information about the Affordable Care Act.  We wanted  to encourage people in the community in need of health insurance to get covered. As a breast cancer survivor I know how important it is to have insurance, so I’m thrilled to help get the word out.

Kate in Washington told me,

I printed out some of the documents in the 'tool kit' you sent and have had them copied and available at our local library.

And Melissa in North Carolina is setting up an information table at her children's upcoming science fair.

These members have got the right idea! Anyone can help spread the word about new protections and benefits under the new law. And it can be as simple as having a few conversations, putting out some flyers, or carving out 10 minutes from an already existing meeting.

*** Here are some quick and easy ways you can help get the word out ***

  • Ask for 10 minutes at your next book club, PTA meeting, or church gathering to share information about the new law. Here's a great video you can use to guide your discussion:

With opponents of the new law working overtime trying to defund and defame the Affordable Care Act, it is incredibly important that we make sure that people get the facts. Over 10,000,000 people have already gotten coverage, but many more don't know what options are available for them.
