October 8th marks the women’s online day of action to raise the minimum wage, as well as Latina Equal Pay Day.  Please join MomsRising, National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, American Academy for University Women (AAUW), and Elianne Ramos for a #WEmatter twitter storm on Wednesday, October 8th to discuss how issues of #EqualPay #Igualdadsalarial and efforts to #RaiseTheWage are critical to the economic security of women and families.

Why: The movement to #RaiseTheWage is closely connected to #EqualPay for all women, including #Igualdadsalarial for Latinas.

The wage gap is especially wide for many women of color, with Latinas who work full time, year round typically making just 56 cents for every dollar their white, non-Hispanic male counterparts make. That means Latinas have to work more than 21 months—until October 8th—to equal what white, non-Hispanic men made last year alone.

Women represent nearly two-thirds of minimum wage workers, and 22 percent of minimum wage workers are women of color. Increasing the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour would give more than 15 million women a raise—and, since the majority of minimum wage workers are women, raising the minimum wage would help close the wage gap. Increasing the minimum wage is a key step toward fair pay for women.
