Mother’s Day video makes the NYT today! Watch & Send to Friends

    Posted May 5th, 2009 by

Ever secretly imagined your name being celebrated on the front page of a newspaper as “Mom of the Year” as you click through online news sites while munching on a yummy snack? Your finger poised over the mouse, about to click the next new story, and you realize: Hey, I know that person! It’s me! And in the whirl of congratulations with the announcement of your award, you find George Clooney asking for your lasagna recipe, Octomom getting jealous of your adoring fan club, and moms lining up for your how-to book before it’s even written.

Turns out with the miracles modern technology we can do that for you! And, it’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face and give you a chuckle or two in the process.

*See your name in lights on a prime time online newscast in this funny, inspirational and, yes, customizable video:
    http://news.cnnbcvideo.com/index2.html

You can also make this online video feature a friend, your mom, and anyone you know who could use a little lift for the hard work she does just being a mom every day.

How’s it work? This very short video is a faux news story about the winner of the “MomsRising Mother of the Year” award. Through the miracles of modern technology, at the end of the video, you can customize the video to put in the name of your choice that will be shown throughout the newscast.

This means your name, all your friends’ names–and, importantly, your own mom’s name–can appear in a news story that reports who won the MomsRising Mother of the Year award. The news story even includes both Angelina Jolie and President Obama celebrating the mom that you choose. We’re talking really, truly customized.

Talking babies, silly dogs, and ace reporters; this video still has the entire MomsRising team laughing out loud, and we’ve been sharing it with all the moms we know. (You can share this video with friends too by simply forwarding this email, or by using the easy customization form at the end of the video so your friends receive the video with their name already inserted throughout the newscast as the recipient of the MomsRising Mother of the Year award. Fun!).

Remember, after you watch it, don’t forget to send it on to a mom or two, or three, or more in your life and brighten their days!

From all of us at MomsRising, in appreciation of you, and all mothers in America!

P.S. In addition to being very funny, check out the text crawl under the newscast. We snuck in a little educational content. What can I say? We’re mothers!

P.P.S. If you’re not a mom, the good news is that you can share this award with a mom you love by passing the video on to her here: http://news.cnnbcvideo.com/index2.html

P.P.P.S. We’re looking for members who can volunteer 5 minutes total to post this Mother’s Day card on their favorite mom/parent list serves, and on your own blogs if you have one. We’d love to hear about how you’ve shared the video. Feel free to drop us a line at Sarah@momsrising.org with “VIDEO” in the subject line of your email to tell us what happened.

I just simply LOVE IT! When I first opened it I thought Wow, some one has the same name as I do. Then to my surprise I realized it was not some other person, it was me. Thanks Kathy, you really made my Mothers Day!

This video was simply wonderful. I was so shocked to see my name on it. It made me feel so good and I sent it to my mother, aunts and co-workers. I usually do not receive anything for Mother’s Day and I have to say, this made my day. I watched it like 10 times already.

    Thanks

    Wynne

I thought this was cute — and I sent it to many of my friends who are Mom’s, several let me know it made their day.

Some good thoughts have been posted on how to deal with the names issue, but it worked for me (it was sent to me) and I thought it was really great. Very clever and fun. Thanks!

I FEEL SO SPECIAL SEEING MY NAME, BUT I AM VERY HARD OF HEARING TO UNDERSTAND ON WHAT THEY ARE SAYING, TOO.

Ack! I can’t send it to my Favorite Mom because…IT’S NOT CLOSED CAPTIONED :-(

There are just gazillions of deaf & hard of hearing moms out there. Closed captioning will also reach out to English-is-a-Second-Language moms. Closed captioning isn’t just the script “streaming” at the bottom of the page. Rather, the gist of the words, instead. Just try *one day* with 32db earplugs in, and you’ll know why CC is crucial.

Please have closed captioning for all of your videos in the future. I know that the moms I know would definitely want to learn more about your organization.

    YaY Moms!

I can understand why this organization would want to exercise some control over the names, as there are thousands of cyber-vandals who enjoy inserting obscenities, jokes or other inappropriate character strings. Still, there must be SOME better way than to just scuttle the application without explanation or any other response. My friend’s name, for example, is “Dixilee”: that’s her actual, official, legal, correct name — but in response to entry of her name the video-customization program did NOTHING. Yes, it accepted “Dixie” — but that’s not her official name. Several previous comments refer to this same problem. Here’s a suggestion: although it’s nice to have the whole video-customization process (program) run automatically (evidently based on lists of common names), it would be better to have the program refer applications with UNcommon names to a panel of human beings, to determine which of the uncommon names is “appropriate”. By “appropriate” I mean it’s not obscene, not just a joke, and probably a real person’s name. The panel of people might not be able to keep up with the flow of uncommon names, “in real time” — so it would be nice to have the program inform the “applicant” that there would be a delay while MomsRising checked the uncommon name; if it’s middle of night at the time, a variant of this message (maybe referring to “business hours”) would be desirable. Thanks for listening.
