News Roundup on Shackling and Detaining Pregnant Women: Time to Rethink our Policies?

February 6, 2014
As Congress and state legislatures got back to work in the new year, issues of incarcerating and shackling pregnant women surfaced on many of their agendas. Progress on Shackling Women in the custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) may soon get relief from shackling. In January, the bipartisan team of Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) and Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID) got language into the federal budget bill to "ensure all detention contracts and agreements" adhere to ICE policy against shackling pregnant women: A pregnant woman or woman in post-delivery recuperation shall not...

via FirstFocus: GOP Immigration Reform Principles Fall Short for Kids

January 31, 2014
On January 30, 2014, the House GOP released their principles on immigration reform. The principles emphasize border security, tougher enforcement, reforms to the immigration system, and a pathway to citizenship for those who entered as children. While the principles are a step in the right direction for kids and families, they fail to reflect several other points in the principles for children in immigration reform that were endorsed by over 200 organizations last year. Below are some key areas where the House GOP principles miss the mark for children and can be improved: · The principles...

TAKE ACTION: Tell Congress to step up today!

January 30, 2014
“I can remember only a few years back when the MomsRising State of the Union BINGO card was nearly empty. Keep up the incredible work!” --Wendy, MomsRising member Two words you never thought you'd see together: Historic. BINGO. Tuesday night’s State of the Union address and MomsRising's related BINGO game were nothing short of historic. For the first time ever, a President of the United States squarely put the issues that most affect the economic stability of America’s families and of our nation in the spotlight: fair pay, early learning and childcare, the minimum wage, sick days, family...

Our Values: The U.S. House of Representatives Should Take Up Immigration Reform

January 23, 2014
We must gain back our national values. Last year a local restaurant in Columbia, South Carolina engaged in anti-immigrant activity by selling derogatory t-shirts attacking Latino immigrants. Their ill-minded actions represent a wave of prejudice we see in our country. But their prejudice was faced by courage and love as dozens of mothers and children peacefully protested outside the restaurant for weeks. Many neighbors and friends cooked meals for these families and offered their support. This is the country I raised my adopted Korean son in. Now it’s time to confront prejudice with love and...

January 14, 2014
This blog post originally appeared in the Huffington Post . Chances are you've heard "Wake Me Up." It was a hit song worldwide last year by Aloe Blacc and remixed by Avicii . But have you checked out the emotionally powerful acoustic version of the music video ? Here it is: The video puts on display the work ethic, strong family ties, and grit of our newest Americans: undocumented youth known as " DREAMers ," who were brought to this country as children. It also shows the love, quiet sacrifices and resolve of their parents, who like any other parent in the United States, simply want to secure...

Outrageous: ICE Admits to Detaining Pregnant Women

January 8, 2014
Fusion , a venture between Univisión and ABC News, conducted an investigation and found that U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) has detained at least 13 pregnant women in one detention facility in Texas. Fusion also published a statement by ICE acknowledging that one of the women "in fact did suffer from a condition that an independent doctor confirmed, always results in a miscarriage." Wow. If this isn't a human rights violation, we don't know what is. From Fusion's in-depth report : Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) says pregnant women shouldn’t be detained in their...

Jesús Huerta's Mom Deserves An Answer

December 23, 2013
“Durham should be a harm-free zone. Durham should be a safe place for all children.” So said Durham mom Omisade Burney-Scott to CBS-affiliate WRAL in response to the death of a teenager, Jesús Huerta, who was shot and killed while sitting in the back of a police car on November 19th. Jesús’s family, friends and community members gathered in downtown Durham for a candle-lit prayer vigil last Thursday, seeking answers in his death. They were met with police, dressed in riot gear, who used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd that included families with small children. As mothers, Jesús’s...

Let's Back These Kids Up!

December 5, 2013
Three weeks ago, my children wrote letters to Congress asking them to keep families together as part of a campaign highlighting the consequences of our outdated immigration policies. Currently, 5.5 million U.S.-born children in mixed status homes run the risk of being separated from one or both parents. Now there's a way for adults to participate in this action as well. We Belong Together , the women's coalition that spearheaded the children's letter-writing campaign, just came up with a clickable e-card tool allowing adults to easily send letters of their own. I tried it and it took me less...

November 26, 2013
To read this article in English, click here .

Advocates Fasting for Families Embody the Strength and Determination of the Immigration Reform Movement

November 21, 2013
Over the past year, the calls for action on immigration reform have been loud and unwavering. Activists have been arrested for staging sit-ins at their congressional representatives’ offices , DREAMers and their families have risked deportation to bring attention to the cause, and thousands have marched on Washington demanding that Congress do something to fix our broken immigration system. But sometimes the quietest acts of political protest can be the most powerful. This week I visited the National Mall, just a stone’s throw away from the capitol, and walked into a tent with a sign that...
