Saturday was a busy day for Doctors for America and MomsRising was happy to assist!  They kicked off their "Coverage is Good Medicine" tour across Florida to raise awareness for the new health benefits available through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) as we round the corner towards the end of the enrollment period.

DFA_22214The tour kicked off in Tampa on Saturday morning with an enrollment fair and Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn as well as Representatives Betty Reed and Janet Cruz. The afternoon found the crew, 15 total, in Orlando where they set up shop at the Smith Community Center on Bruton Blvd. City Commissioner Samuel Ings was there to speak to the crowd and doctors ensured that all questions were answered with a thorough presentation on the Affordable Care Ac as well as a Q&A at the end.

“Doctors support the Affordable Care Act because we know coverage is good medicine. For millions of Americans who have already signed up, quality, affordable healthcare is now a reality,” said Dr. Mona Mangat, Chair of Doctors for America and an Allergist-Immunologist based in St. Petersburg.

It was great to see the passion that these doctors had as they spoke of patients previously unable to afford healthcare. And it was great to see how participating tour partners Enroll America, Florida CHAIN, Planned Parenthood, National Congress for Black Women, Organizing for Action and MomsRising worked together for this important cause.

Initial estimates put the number of people enrolled at 150 from the Tampa and Orlando events. Looking ahead, the tour will make its way to Jacksonville on March 1st and Tallahassee on March 5th.

Brannon Jordan, communications director with Doctors for America said "It was amazing to see how many people came out to get enrolled -- lots of folks who clearly benefited from the one-on-one assistance from our doctors and navigators." We couldn't agree more!
