Assault Weapons Don’t Belong on WalMart Shelves

    Posted January 8th, 2013 by

Walmart has banned music with explicit lyrics, but continues to sell assault weapons like those used in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting.

    Ridiculous.

Walmart carries a full range of assault weaponry that has recently included the Bushmaster AR-15, which was used in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting of 20 children. It was also used to kill the 12 people in an Aurora, CO, movie theater last summer; and the 10 people in the 2002 sniper shootings that terrorized the Washington, D.C. area for almost a month. This gun is designed to take down as many targets as possible. And this study finds that more kids suffer from firearm injuries than was previously thought.

Assault weapons have no place in our communities. Help us tell Walmart: Time to show you care about children and families by stopping your sales of all assault weapons and high-capacity magazines like those used in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. Click here: http://action.momsrising.org/sign/Walmart-Weapon/

Why Walmart? It’s the largest gun dealer in the country, and the guns and ammunition on its shelves have already contributed to  gun violence around the country. When Jared Lee Loughner shot Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and 18 other people in Tucson two years ago this month, he bought his ammunition at a Walmart.  Blaec Lammers, the young Missouri man arrested last November for planning to open fire at a screening of Twilight, had purchased an AR-15 and 400 rounds of ammunition at a Walmart.

Again: assault weapons have no place in our communities. So please help us tell Walmart: Time to show you care about children and families by stopping your sales of all assault weapons and high-capacity magazines like those used in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting: http://action.momsrising.org/sign/Walmart-Weapon/

Walmart has, in the past, indicated a willingness to help curb assault weapons sales. In 2004, it assured U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Dianne Feinstein that it would not sell assault weapons in their stores, on their websites, or through their “special-order” catalogues. In 2008, it made a deal with Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) to adopt tougher rules for selling assault weapons. But gun sales soared after the election of President Obama, helping to turn Walmart into the largest gun retailer in the country, and Walmart never delivered what it promised.

Walmart needs to keep its promises and stand by our nation’s children and families. Tell Walmart: Time to show you care about children and families by stopping your sales of all assault weapons and high-capacity magazines like those used in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting: http://action.momsrising.org/sign/Walmart-Weapon/

It’s past time for Walmart’s bosses to reconsider the effects of the company’s policies on our children, our communities, our country, and on the world. We can’t wait until the next mass shooting like Sandy Hook for Walmart to take those assault weapons off the shelves. Please click here to speak up and then share this blogpost! Because together, we’re a powerful voice for children, moms, women, and families.

I just cannot agree w/ this gun ban. My family has always had guns – grandfathers, uncles, aunts, cousins, grandmothers, my mom, my dad, myself – hundreds of guns as far back as I can remember – & none of our guns have ever killed anyone. My mother was shot & killed when I was 12 by my stepfather but the gun didn’t kill her the person did – why do we never put the blame of a shooting death where it belongs- w/ the person who pulls the trigger! I just don’t understand everyone screaming that the guns are responsible, the bullets are responsible, poverty is responsible, etc. Really – K-Mart is responsible for the bullets used in Columbine???? Walmart is responsible for the assault on Gabrielle Gifford & others???? I couldn’t agree more more with the NRA press release regarding trained armed personnel in our schools. I’ve said the exact same same thing after every mass shooting. An armed force is the ONLY way to stop an armed attack and history since the beginning of time proves this. Would we go to war w/ no guns? Would we want our police to have no guns? Would ANYONE, gun advocate or not, want to face an armed attacker w/o a GUN? Does anyone ever wonder why no one ever attempts a mass shooting at a police station or a military base or even a gun range – because they won’t attempt this when they know people will shoot back! They go after unarmed, unsuspecting, unprotected people. Just like any predatory animal – they go after “the weak”, the unprotected, the weak. Now I’m not a “gun nut”, but I do believe in my right to own/buy a gun and more importantly, my right to defend myself. This country wouldn’t even BE A COUNTRY W/O GUNS AND THE CITIZENS RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS. If they take away our guns only the good, law abiding people will be left unarmed, unable to protect ourselves from some psychopath in the middle of the night trying to kill our families. To even think about taking away our guns is ludicrous. Do that and only the bad guys, who don’t give a damn about laws in the first place, will have guns and the rest of us, the good guys who do abide by the laws, will be sitting ducks, easy prey, “the weak”. I just can’t understand the logic behind this “take away the guns” mentality. People kill people not guns! And please, stop calling them assault weapons – I suppose any gun could be termed an assault weapon if it were used in an assault. They are just rifles/guns unless SOMEONE PICKS THEM UP & USES THEM! I own a Bushmaster AR 15 rife & a 9mm & a Desert Eagle 50 & none of them have ever jumped up, ran outside & started shooting people – proving that guns don’t kill people. I target practice w/ them for fun, they are cool, & my husband & I compete for bragging rights on who was the best shot that day. I also have them for protection. Did you hear the story about the woman w/ twins who had a convicted felon w/ multiple crime convictions who broke into her house in broad daylight? She hid w/ her small children but he searched until he found them – then she defended herself & her children & shot him! Now where would she have been had she not had a gun – what would have happened to her two young sons? Maybe she/we should thank whatever store sold her the ammo & gun for saving her & her family from probable rape, torture, death! And he didn’t even have a gun – he was armed w/ a crowbar – should we outlaw those as well & harass store who sell them? A crowbar could be just as deadly as any gun! Our Constitution provides us w/ an incontestable right to own guns – our men & women have fought & died to stand up for that document & that particular amendment was put there for a very specific reason & it is very clear about it – not open for debate or interpretation. My grandfathers & my father & my uncle fought for that Constitution & the freedom it protects & every Presidents takes an oath to uphold it! Every military member takes an oath to uphold it! To disregard the Constitution & the rights it provides for the citizens of this country is a slap in the face of every fallen soldier & their families. You don’t go after everyone, the majority especially, for the sins of a few however horrific they may be. Even God doesn’t punish everyone for the sinners amongst us – even in the end the good will not pay the price along w/ the bad. Guns are not evil, they are not bad, they are not killers – people are – guns are simply tools & I dare say, toys for some people, livelihoods for others, & “food” for others. Please, let us not resort to blaming a store, or a gun, or a bullet, or a video game, or a band, or a song for the ACTS OF A PERSON!

No Ar-15 was used in the Sandy hook shootings. Only 4 handguns were used. The major problem you have is outlawing so called “assault” weapons is only the law abiding citizens will be the ones to turn their weapons in. Tell me how its working on your drug problem as well.

Some of the problem here is that the media has a mis-conception of what an “assault” weapon is. The AR-15 sold in Wal-Mart is NOT categorized as an assault weapon. However no one wants to correct that! In SandyHook he used a “Competition Bushmaster”. That also is NOT an assault rifle! And where these shootings have happened there are strict gun laws sow hat is the answer? More gun laws? How about common sense? How about paying attention to what, who, when, and where, our kids are doing? How about us standing up as a Nation and deciding that we are taking our Families back? How about cutting off all the crud that is shown on TV that we encourage our kids to watch so we don’t have to talk to each other? How about taking down the Now Technology that has CONSUMED our Families lives? How about teaching the importance of another life not just our own??

Timims, respectfully, I am curious, in all honesty, if you used an assault weapon when you needed a gun to protect yourself?

I don’t agreee with the disregard of the second amenedment. Assault weapons will always be part of the community as will poverty, drunk drivers, cancer. They are a fact of life. It is a matter if you want to disregard the second amendment. They put it as part of the constitution for a reason. Not only for personal protect but protection from the government itself. The criminals will alwasy have these weapons.

I have over 50 guns in my collection that are locked up and used for competion. This includes many differnet assault rifles. They have never killed someone but they have protected when someone attempted to rob me. Thank god i had protection.

Your approach will not stop violent crime or killings.
